The Mosquito™ Anti Loitering Device / Anti-Vandal System (Le Mosquito/Beethoven in France, Swiss-Mosquito in Switzerland) is the solution to the eternal problem of unwanted gatherings of youths and teenagers in shopping malls, around shops and anywhere else they are causing problems. The presence of these teenagers discourages genuine shoppers and customers from coming into your shop, affecting your turnover and profits. Anti social behavior has become the biggest threat to private property over the last decade and there has been no effective deterrent until now.
Acclaimed by the Police forces of many areas of the United Kingdom, the Mosquito™ Security System has been described as:
"the most effective tool in our fight against anti social behaviour."
Shop keepers around the world have purchased the device to move along unwanted gatherings of teenagers and anti social youths. Railway companies have placed the device to discourage youths from spraying graffiti on their trains and the walls of stations.
How does The Mosquito™ work?
Howard Stapleton, inventor of The Mosquito™ explains how the device works and addresses common questions about its safety and how it affects people.
The Mosquito™ device emits a pulsed high frequency tone which disperses groups/individuals on the basis of annoyance/irritation.
The device usually takes between 5 and 15 minutes to take effect. Groups / individuals exposed to The Mosquito™ device's persistent high frequency noise will only endure it for a short period of time before leaving the area.
The Mosquito™ MK4 has a 35-40 metre range. If you are a private individual or small business owner, our Mini Mosquito may be a better option for you due to its shorter 10-12 metre range - just as effective but at a much lower price!
Is the device harmful to hearing?
The Mosquito™ is completely harmless to the health/hearing of individuals of all ages, even with prolonged exposure.
To ensure our devices comply with current legislation, they have been tested by several independent organisations including:
- The National Physical Laboratory (NPL)
- The National Health Service (NHS)
- The Institute of Sound and Vibration Research (ISVR)
- The Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RSPCH)
- Belgian Superior Health Council (BSHC)
Please see our downloads section for full copies of these reports and many others.
Contrary to VAST information on the internet, The Mosquito™ Device is NOT ultrasonic. Ultrasonic is 20 KHz and above, whereas the maximum frequency of the device as proven by the NPL was 18.6 KHz.
Is The Mosquito™ device legal?
Simon Morris, Commercial Director for CSS Ltd clarifies the legality of using The Mosquito™ to deter troublesome teenagers from loitering or causing damage to property.
Many people ask us "is The Mosquito™ device legal?" due to the media attention, misinformation and misconceptions that have surrounded it in recent years.
During 2008 - 2010 there was a great deal of press about The Mosquito™ device being banned by the Council of Europe, a body that has NO law making powers. This however was just a PR stunt by the Human Rights groups.
The FACT of the matter is that the device has been voted on in the European Parliament as perfectly legal to own and use. This view is supported in open debate by the Home Secretary in the House of Commons.
Do Mosquito devices really work?
If you have groups of teenagers regularly loitering near your property, causing criminal damage, putting off customers or even abusing customers and staff, then Mosquito anti-loitering devices are quite simply the most effective way to put an end to the problem without confrontation!
The Mosquito™ is widely used by police and local authorities, chain stores, independent shops, schools and private individuals to protect their property from the effects of teenage antisocial behaviour.
We have received countless feedback from customers who have reduced anti-social behaviour and loitering as a result of installing the Mosquito devices. Not only have the devices improved their environment, in many case they have saved them money.

Mosquito Mk4 applications
Antisocial behaviour
If you are regularly a victim of anti-social behaviour from teenagers outside your home or business then a Mosquito Device is the most effective way of putting a stop to it. Police and ASBO's (Anti Social Behaviour Orders) only have limited success in dealing with these problems as they cannot attend every incident and ASBO's do nothing if the kids cannot be caught. While installing a Mosquito does not solve the societal problems that cause ASB (Anti-social Behaviour) it will reclaim your right to peaceful enjoyment of your home or business.
Graffiti
If you have ever suffered with graffiti, you will know that Graffiti removal services are expensive and anti graffiti coatings are not always appropriate for the situation. Installing a Mosquito at a site that is repeatedly being tagged will prevent further graffiti in most circumstances.
Vandalism
Many of our customers are victims of crime who have spent thousands of pounds annually repairing physical damage to their properties. As is the case with graffiti and anti-social behaviour, the crime prevention service and crime prevention officers are without the ability to provide serious products that make a real difference to such situations. Installing Mosquito's will make the immediate area an annoying and unpleasant place to be with the result that if the kids don't like being there, the vandalism will stop.
One school we dealt with recently saved £50,000 on vandalism repair costs in just 3 months after installing Mosquito's.
Loitering
The conventional definition of anti-social behaviour not withstanding, sometimes it is just not acceptable for a group of hooded teenagers to be hanging around blocking entrances and exits to shops, banks etc. as it puts off customers from approaching the building. If you suffer from such loitering problems, you may have asked these kids nicely to move away from the area, only to be verbally abused, possibly your staff have been victims of abuse! Installing a Mosquito MK4 is a simple and benign way to make the immediate area unpleasant for such kids to loiter for more than a few minutes without affecting your real customers.
Homeless / Sleeping rough
Many police forces around the world have asked us to produce a Mosquito that affects older people too. The latest version, Mosquito MK4 now has a selector switch to allow the unit to emit either a tone that mainly the under 25's can hear OR a tone that everyone can hear. This is particularly effective in areas where homeless people sleep rough, subway tunnels where unpleasant characters gather at night etc.
Over 18's Only
There are many places where it is not acceptable or even legal for children to be. Betting shops are one example of this. Many betting shops have few staff and those are often behind screens. Many also have fruit machines that kids sneak in and use. In order to prevent this, many betting shops use the Mosquito inside the premises, thereby making it an area where the kids don't want to loiter.
Common Mosquito Questions
I am not a teenager, will the Mosquito™ annoy me?
This is very unlikely and research has shown that the majority of people over the age of 25, have lost the ability to hear at this frequency range. It should be borne in mind, however, that the Mosquito™ unit usually has the desired effect – moving the crowds away – within just a few minutes, at which time the unit can be turned off. So even if you are able to hear the noise to some degree, you would not have to put up with it for long.
Does the Mosquito affect dogs?
Although dogs have very acute hearing and are easily able to hear at this frequency, extensive testing shows that it does not appear to bother them.
How quickly does the Mosquito work?
The longer someone is exposed to the sound, the more annoying it becomes. Field trials have shown that teenagers are acutely aware of The Mosquito™ and usually move away from the area within 5 – 15 minutes. The field trails also suggest that after several uses, the groups of children / teenagers tend not to loiter in the areas covered by The Mosquito™, even when it is not turned on.
What is the range of the Mosquito™?
The effective range is between 30 and 40 metres. The closer one gets to the unit the more effective it is.
What about teenage customers and my neighbours?
It takes 5 - 10 minutes for the presence of the sound to become annoying, even on teenagers. Genuine teenage customers who will only be within range for seconds whilst on their way in and out of the shop will not find the sound of significant consequence. As the transmission of the sound is directional and as high frequency short wavelengths do not travel effectively through solid objects, it is unlikely that there will be any adverse effect on neighbours.
Who installs the Mosquito™?
Although the unit is simple to fit, there are several considerations such as which setting to use, the angle that it is mounted at and the position it is mounted at, that require a professional alarm / security engineer to determine. In all cases, we strongly suggest that you contact one of our dealer / installers on our ‘Distributors’ page. If you cannot find a company local to you, please contact us and we will find a local installer for you.
How robust is the Mosquito unit?
The unit is housed in a die-cast alloy and steel vandal-proof casing and is therefore very strong. CSS recommend that the unit is mounted at least 3 meters above ground level to reduce the risk of vandalism. For added security, CSS provide a security cage to cover the unit.
How do I turn the Mosquito™ on and off?
Mosquito MK4 has been designed with a range of built-in input terminals. These will allow you to connect the system to a range of triggers (input devices) such as a timer, remote control, PIR, CCTV system etc.
The Mini Mosquito simply turns on / off at the power socket.
How loud is the Mosquito™?
Mosquito™ MK4 has a maximum dB output of 108 dB, however, in order to access volumes greater than 95 dB, users will require an additional micro-chip from CSS.
The Music Mosquito whilst having a built-in AGC that will if required maintain the output volume at 5 dB above background levels has a maximum volume of 100 dB.
The Mini-Mosquito has a maximum volume of 85 dB
