CSS provide a remote control for the Mosquito, however, this has a range of only 50 meters. This is OK if there is someone on-site to activate the unit. Where staff are not present, the only other options are either a timer or a PIR, however, in certain situations, these can be problematic.
To this end, CSS have developed the GSM Mosquito. The unit can be activated and deactivated simply by sending a text message to it via a mobile ‘phone.
What advantage does this provide? Well, it removes the responsibility for using the device from local staff and allows a qualified person to decide if it is really necessary to activate the device. This will prevent the Mosquito from being used arbitrarily and incorrectly.
We envisage that when the site staff feels there is a problem, they can call a designated qualified person and explain the problem. If the qualified person feels that the situation warrants activation, he / she can activate that particular Mosquito. The Mosquito will automatically deactivate after 20 minutes, however, the unit can be deactivated sooner if required by sending another text message.
The Mosquito will have a SIM card already fitted. This card will be on a monthly pay as you use tariff with one of the major UK mobile networks (probably O2 as they have the best UK coverage). The monthly cost of this will be in the region of £11.00 (exact prices to be confirmed at time of ordering due to network tariff changes). Any mobile ‘phone on any network can be used by the qualified person / authority to send instructions to the Mosquito.
This ensures that the use of the Mosquito is solely in the hands of a qualified person and ensures that the unit is NOT abused.

The GSM Mosquito system was initially designed for use by police forces who needed to use the Mosquito in areas or at times when there is no one on site to activate the device. The system is now being taken up by private sector clients also.
There are three primary methods for assessing when it is appropriate to activate the system.
1. Residents / business people in the area are provided a contact number for a qualified / nominated person / police officer. When the local residents / business people feel there is a problem, they call the nominated person, explain the situation and if the nominated person feels it is appropriate, he / she can send an activation text message to the relevant Mosquito specifying the length of time the unit should stay on.
2. Local police patrols / security staff roaming the area can upon seeing a problem situation, activate the unit as they feel is necessary.
3. In areas where there is CCTV coverage, the Mosquito can be activated by the CCTV monitoring service
