Mosquito set to sting the yobs

A HIGH-pitched screeching device nicknamed 'The Mosquito' may soon be installed to deter yobs hanging around a housing estate.

The £600 gadget emits a sound audible only to dogs and people under the age of 20.

It's said to be so annoying that youths simply have to clutch their ears and move on - the seemingly perfect answer to the problems on Stepney's huge Ocean Estate.

Youths have been intimidating families, dealing and taking drugs.

A number of meetings have been held to tackle the problems.

Some anti-social behaviour orders have been taken out, but the aggression has continued.

A Tower Hamlets neighbourhood police team has now applied for funding for the 'Mosquito' and want to put one in Canal Close, near the Regent's Canal, where the yobs hang out.

They hope it will be there in the next couple of months as gangs start to increase in size during their spring and summer 'offensive.'

"It really works," Pol Sgt Ian Johnson told a residents' meeting.
